Italy comes within one out of beating Cuba
|
The Italian National Team came within one out of beating super power Cuba for the first time ever during the Italian Baseball Week tournament. Italy settled for a 1-1 tie as extra innings are not allowed in the tournament to save pitching staffs for the upcoming World Championships.
Italy was held to just three hits, but scored a run in the 5th inning as veteran Filippo Crociati singled in Rimini teammate Lorenza Avagnina. Having obtained 26 of the 27 outs necessary for an history shutout victory, Italy gave up a two out pinch hit single followed by a hit batter. After Ularetti relieved Schiavone the game tying hit just eluded a diving Imperiali, and when Italy was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, they had to settle for a tie.
