Italy comes within one out of beating Cuba

The Italian National Team came within one out of beating super power Cuba for the first time ever during the Italian Baseball Week tournament.  Italy settled for a 1-1 tie as extra innings are not allowed in the tournament to save pitching staffs for the upcoming World Championships.

Italy was held to just three hits, but scored a run in the 5th inning as veteran Filippo Crociati singled in Rimini teammate Lorenza Avagnina.  Having obtained 26 of the 27 outs necessary for an history shutout victory, Italy gave up a two out pinch hit single followed by a hit batter.  After Ularetti relieved Schiavone the game tying hit just eluded a diving Imperiali, and when Italy was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, they had to settle for a tie.

World Baseball Classic

Alas, despite the shocker against a very good team Canada, Italy lost twice to Venezuela and headed home, while watching rival Netherlands be the cinderella and advance to Miami.

It was terrific to see the Italian-born players on the field and playing well after the disappointing 2006 where even the top Italians saw almost no playing time.  Marco Mazzieri has done an amazing job.  The win against Canada happened with four Italians in the starting lineup: Dallospedale, Chiarini, Mazzanti, and Liddi.  It was great to see Zileri, Corradini, De Santis, Panerati, and Maestri all on the field during the three games as well.  These players proved how Italy can compete, and I think that had they given the same exposure to the best Italian players three years ago it would have been a much better result.

Is anybody else getting excited for 2013?  All of the above players will still be in there prime, and a new generation of players should contribute.  I don't think anybody wants to kick the beloved Mike Piazza and other great players out of the Italy uniform, but seeing Italian born players make up around 50% of innings and at bats would be terrific.

I will be covering round 2 in San Diego for Italian language Baseball.it, our long time friends, and will also be covering the finals in Los Angeles.  This site is about Italian baseball, so I won't be posting much here, but there will be relevant updates and interesting details along the way.
